Spy School: Goes South

Book: Spy School: Goes South

Author: Stuart Gibbs

Age Range: 8-13

Official Summary

Thirteen-year-old Ben Ripley has been caught in the snares of SPYDER more than once and knows well enough to be suspicious of anything that seems too good to be true—despite needing special tutoring in advanced survival techniques. So when Murray Hill finally breaks his silence with an offer to hand over the SPYDER elite, Ben knows that there must be something going on. But his hesitation doesn’t stop the assignment.

The Mission: Follow Murray Hill to an undisclosed location with no one else but Erica Hale to identify SPYDER leadership. Once found, contact the CIA to sweep in and finish the job. DO NOT CONTACT SPYDER DIRECTLY.

However, as Ben suspected, nothing goes as planned, and what should be an easy mission quickly turns deadly. Now, Ben and Erica will have to face rogue agents, trained killers, and even very hungry crocodiles in a race against the clock to find out what SPYDER is up to this time—and thwart their evil plans.

What I Think:

Ok. This was a good book, but not exactly what I was hoping for. It was not as good as the other books in the series. Murray is finally ready to talk, and leads Ben and Erica down to Mexico. Only, Mike and Zoe are stowaways, the pilots are moles for SPYDER, and the plane crashes in the jungle. Crocodiles, and many other things threaten the gang. But, they find the resort where SPYDER is holed up, and then, naturally, everything goes wrong.

When Ben, Zoe, Mike, Murray, and Erica get to the resort, this is where the characters start to go downhill. Zoe becomes whiny, annoying, and acts a lot younger than she is. She starts pressuring Ben to make a decision, who he likes more, her or Erica. She seems as un-Zoe like as Zoe could possibly get. She is not cheerful like usual, and acts more sullen and jealous.

Meanwhile, Erica is also very strange. It's like she's forgotten that she and Ben are "friends," or at least a little friendly. She is cold with him in every encounter during the mission, and gets very mad at him on multiple occasions.

The other thing I wasn't expecting was the lack of character development. I have always felt that Ben grew a little bit by the end of the book. But this time, it felt to me like he stayed the same. He didn't seem less capable by the end of the book.

This book was not what I thought it was going to be, put the more I re-read it, the better it seems. Event though it didn't play out like I thought it would, it was still funny and smooth. I would definitely recommend it.
