Spy Ski School

Book: Spy Ski School

Author: Stuart Gibbs

Age Range: 8-13

Official Summary:

Thirteen-year-old Ben Ripley is not exactly the best student spy school has ever seen—he keeps flunking Advanced Self Preservation. But outside of class, Ben is pretty great at staying alive. His enemies have kidnapped him, shot at him, locked him in a room with a ticking time bomb, and even tried to blow him up with missiles. And he’s survived every time.

After all that unexpected success, the CIA has decided to activate Ben for real.

The Mission: Become friends with Jessica Shang, the daughter of a suspected Chinese crime boss, and find out all of her father’s secrets. Jessica wants to go to ski school in the Rocky Mountains, so a select few spy school students are going skiing too—under cover, of course.

Ben might not be able to handle a weapon (or a pair of skis), but he can make friends easy peasy. That is, until his best friend from home drops in on the trip and jeopardizes the entire mission…

What I think:

Oh my gosh. This was such a good book. Stuart Gibbs has done it again. This time, Ben Ripley goes on a mission to Vail ski resort, Colorado, to try to find out and prevent the plot of Chinese criminal mastermind, Leo Shang. Coming along with him are Erica, Chip, Jawa, Warren, Zoe, Hank, Alexander, and Cyrus. Ben needs to use Jessica Shang to get close to her father in hopes to investigate. When everything goes wrong, will Ben be able to save the day?

This is one of the very frequently. Her alias is Sasha Rotko, and her personality is the opposite of Erica. As it turns out, Erica can't be good at everything, and her first run on the slope proves this.

Ben is also maturing a little, and does surprisingly well on his mission, despite some complications. Stuart Gibbs nicely delivers the plot twist, and HUGE surprise at the end. He also keeps up the pace as well as the books before, if not better. As always, it was written very nicely, and interesting for ALL ages.

The only thing I didn't like was that it was a little predictable. I had guessed the plot about two chapters before it was revealed. There are a few mentions of "idiot," but nothing else "inappropriate." Overall, it was a great book, and I would definitely recommend it.
